Chapter 1: Type is everywhere

If you think about it, how does type effect our lives? If type was taken away from us, we would not know where to go, what is in our food and many more casualities that could occur.

After reading the first chapeter in Spiekermann, there were many different viewpoints that they researched from newspapers to product labels and signage in todays society and in the past.
First beginning with the way newspapers and headings have changed. Most newspapers still keep with an Old English typeface that was used in the earlier days of newspapers. Also, they use a Times New Roman and bold face. This is an example of an old San Francisco newspaper, look at the heading and compare it to the modern the Herald and the others.

There are similar differences in the heading, but if you start reading into the newspapers, the layout is different, some use pictures and one is strictly a lot of words. If you ever get the chance go to the library and research all the different types of newspapers and how they are all layed out.

The next topic that I found very interesting is the end of the chapter that talks about signage and the way it is used and how it will attract the publics eyes. The government is well in control of how our signs look on our roads and highways. Although there are many different ways to see signs. Whether your reading it standing, driving or on a well-lit platform. No matter the situation light effects it. If it is at night and lit by electricity or in the day lit by the sun, bold face type styles and very easily to read are key to good signage. I experience this part of the book everyday in my job. I am a graphic designer for a sign company and here are some of the examples of the work I have done and how they compare to the topics talked about in the book.

So next time you are traveling through your day to day travels, look around you and look at different signs, vehicle lettering and even your daily bathroom signs.

I'm not sure what scares me more - a whole post on fonts and lettering, or my interest in it.
